Pool Arch Canyon - Scenic Desert Hike with Unique Rappels

Pool Arch Canyon is a beautiful and approachable canyon adventure located just minutes from Moab. The route combines a scenic desert hike through towering sandstone fins with a short but exciting technical section featuring three rappels.
Along the hike you’ll visit two natural arches before reaching the technical portion of the canyon. The highlight is the 150-foot rappel into the pool below Pool Arch, one of the most unique rappels and arches in the Moab area.
The route continues with two additional rappels — a 70-foot descent followed by a 110-foot free-hanging rappel deeper into the canyon.
This adventure is a great option for beginners who want a true canyoneering experience without the crowds. This is one of the only canyon options that is very likely to have all to yourself.

What to Expect
The trip begins with a scenic hike through the Behind the Rocks desert landscape. Sandstone fins surround the route and provide expansive views of the canyon terrain.
The technical section begins at Pool Arch, where the first rappel drops 130 feet into the pool below the arch. Just below the first rappel, you will encounter a short wade through a pool of water.
After continuing down canyon, you enter into a unique slot canyon section where you will get to practice some stemming and downclimbing techniques. This section also tends to hold some water, which may require wading for 15 feet.
Down-canyon you will encounter two more rappels:
• 70-foot rappel down a sandstone ledge
• 110-foot free-hanging rappel into the canyon below
Once the final rappel is complete, the route finishes with an easy hike back to the trailhead.
Most groups complete the adventure in 4–6 hours.
